It appears as though our local creeks runeth over with crayfish. I do not recall seeing these creatures growing up, or even in the past ten years since moving back. The creek we have found them in, is the spawning body of water that we release our salmon fry into every spring...so no wonder they're flourishing!
We caught two for our Living Lab and are really enjoying studying and learning more about these 'mini lobsters'. We tried our best to duplicate their habitat by covering the bottom with small aquarium gravel, some larger rocks and pieces of bark. We learned that it's important to give them a place to hide, as well as, a ledge that is high enough for them to get their gills our of the water in order to receive oxygen since we do not have a pump hooked up to their vessel.
We have been feeding them shrimp pellets, freeze dried blood worms and bits of lettuce and sprouts.
We have also learned, that crayfish can survive for months out of water, as long as it's gills stay damp - so in a humid environment...who knew??!
